Sub Domains

  • How do I set up subdomains for my account ?

To setup subdomains follow the following instructions -

Make sure that subdomains are enabled in your WHM. Look for the link on the left - "Disable or Enable Subdomains Per Account". Enable subdomains for the domain you'd like to use subdomains with.

(1). Enter your control panel at www.yourdomain/cpanel and click on the "Subdomains".

(2). Then enter the name you want for your sub-domain in the box privided there.

(3). If you receive the following error when you press "Add" -

    "ndc: reload command successful
DOMAIN.COM could not be modified because it does not resolve to a valid ip address. Please ask the system admin to check their resolv.conf and their dns trust relationship Ignore any messages of success this can only result in failure!"

    Then to correct this problem:

    - If this domain was recently created, you must wait for it to propagate. This could take 3 days +.

    - If the domain has fully propagated [that means you can access your site by typing in your domain name into your browser], then it could mean that sub-domains aren't setup on this end. Please email us and ask us to turn them on for you. Sometimes I forget to activate subdomains when setting up a new account.

    Uploading to your subdomain -

Now after you have successfully created your subdomain via your Control Panel, you must upload to that directory. If you created the subdomain of cats.domain.com, then the directory of cats lives at yourdomain.com/cats. You upload to yourdomain.com/cats. Don't upload to cats.yourdomain.com.

    Accessing your subdomain -

After you have uploaded your site to your subdomain, you can then access that site in 2 ways -

(1). You can access that site via yourdomain.com/cats or

    (2). cats.yourdomain.com.

You CANNOT access your subdomain via http://www.cats.domain.com./ Here the "www" is actually a type of subdomain in itself. So remember to setup all links to subdomains as yourdomain.com/cats or cats.yourdomain.com.

Uploading to a subdomain ..../cats, will have the same Username and Password as your main site.

  • Can I setup subdomains so they have their own control panels and email ?

This is very simple to do.

    (1). Access your WHM
(2). Click the "Create a New Account" link.
(3). Setup your subdomain just like it was a normal domain. So in the domain field, add your subdomain - name.yourdomain.com and set the rest of the options as per normal.
    (4). Click "Do it"
(5). You will now see the confirmation page with your subdomain's username, password and other details.

Upload to your subdomain [your main domain needs to have propagated first] with your username and password as per normal. Now your subdomain has its own POP email such as bob@name.yourdomain.com. It can have its own forum such as http://name.yourdomain.com/forum or setup a subdomain from inside the name.yourdomain.com/cpanel of forum and access the forum at forum.name.yourdomain.com.

Just treat the subdomain like you would any normal top level domain etc. If you need your subdomain to have its own IP address, follow the instructions for getting and assigning an IP address to the above instructions.
